The UK government released a paper detailing the newly proposed “settled status” scheme for EU nationals residing in the United Kingdom.

The settled status will replace the current Indefinite Leave to Remain.  EU citizens that have lived in the UK for five or more years would be eligible to apply for the settled status, which will allow access to healthcare, education and benefits.

The document has the following announcements:

  • EU citizens residing in the UK will have up to two years to apply for settled status once the UK leaves the EU
  • The cost of the application to apply for settled status will be no more than the cost of a British passport
  • Introduction of a digital, streamlined and user friendly application system
